The sentencing of a Maui woman, who pleaded guilty in July to scamming six Hawaii families out of nearly $900,000, has been delayed after the defendant fired her attorney.

Jed Duarosan, who operated a Ponzi scheme, was supposed to be sentenced in federal court Monday afternoon, but fired her attorney from the Federal Public Defender Program just as the hearing got under way.

U.S. District Court Judge Michael Seabright ordered that she be kept in custody overnight and scheduled another hearing for this morning at 10:30 a.m.

Duarosan faces up to 10 years in prison.
