For about 28 minutes, Kahuku appeared poised to leave Pete Smith Court with a win over top-ranked Kalaheo.
But the host Mustangs mustered a furious rally over the the final 3:35 of regulation to erase an 11-point deficit and controlled the four-minute overtime to pull out a 62-56 win on Wednesday night.
Kaleb Gilmore scored 10 of his team-high 22 points in the final 5:16, including overtime, and the Mustangs pressured the fourth-ranked Red Raiders into 20 turnovers in the second half while improving to 2-0 in the OIA East.
"It’s just one of those things where our kids just kept battling," Kalaheo coach Alika Smith said. "All the credit to them because they didn’t want to lose this game. We were dead in the water, couldn’t hit a shot, and we just found a way to do it."
Kahuku forward Denhym Brooke sliced through the Kalaheo defense on his way to scoring 16 points in the first half while 6-6 center Hyrum Harris controlled the boards and the Red Raiders led 33-25 at halftime.
Kalaheo turned up the pressure in the second half and limited the duo’s opportunities, but still trailed 39-32 going into the fourth quarter.

"We played a lot more physical," Smith said. "We were letting them do whatever they wanted to do inside (in the first half). We wanted to bump them off of their spots, try to get them out of the post a little more."
Kahuku stretched the lead to 46-35 when the 6-7 Brooke hit one of two free throws with 3:35 left. But a layup by Alec MacLoed and a 3-pointer by Captain Whitlock triggered a 15-4 Mustang surge to close regulation.
Gilmore converted a steal into a layup to bring the Mustangs within a bucket with 1:16 left and tied the game at 50-50 with two free throws with 37.4 seconds left.
Kupaa Harrison, who finished with 16 points, hit a jumper from the free-throw line to open the scoring in overtime and Gilmore came up with steals on the next two possessions, taking the first in for a layup and drawing a foul on the second.
"They came out harder than us, ready to play," Gilmore said. "We came out sluggish and they went out to a good lead and we had to fight back as a team, pass the ball around, get open shots. … We woke up basically."
Brooke finished with a game-high 23 points while Harris scored 16 for the Red Raiders, who fell to 1-1 in a tough opening stretch to the regular season. After opening with a win over Farrington and Wednesday’s loss at Kalaheo, the Red Raiders next face Roosevelt on Friday.
The Red Raiders were also without point guard Alohi Gilman on Wednesday due to a football trip, and Kalaheo swiped 14 steals in the second half.
"I think their pressure really affected us, not being able to get the ball started or get it inside," Kahuku coach Alan Akina said. "That’s a great looking team, they look like they’re in midseason form.
"We’re two to three weeks into this with all of our football guys coming in, new guys transferring in. We’re still figuring this out, still learning how to play together. It’s a work in progress but for 3 1/2 quarters we looked pretty good. We just have to learn to finish games."
