HPU men fall on buzzer-beater
Tom Sawatzke hit a 3-pointer from the right wing as time expired to lift Carleton College over Hawaii Pacific 74-71 in men’s basketball on Saturday night at the Moanalua High School gym.
The Sea Warriors’ Malte Ziegenhagen was fouled when he drove to the basket with four seconds remaining and the score tied at 71. But he missed both free throws, setting the stage for Sawatzke’s winning shot.
Sawatzke finished with 23 points, hitting seven of the Knights’ 11 3-pointers.
Leif Rodney had 14 points, and Kevin Attila scored all 12 of his points from behind the arc for HPU (0-3), which led by as many as 10 points in the second half before the Knights (2-0) rallied.
