Jordan Yamamoto and Kodi Medeiros more than lived up to the hype on Wednesday night.

The top two high school arms in the state squared off in the Division I quarterfinals of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball State Championships, with Saint Louis’ Yamamoto twirling a two-hit shutout to outduel Medeiros and Waiakea in a 2-0 victory at Les Murakami Stadium.

With nearly 30 radar guns behind home plate registering all 227 pitches the two future draft picks threw, Yamamoto stood victorious at the end after his ninth strikeout punctuated a masterful performance.

Yamamoto walked two and allowed only four balls to reach the outfield as the Crusaders (16-6) advanced to Thursday night’s second semifinal to play No. 2 seed Campbell.

"We’re making our dream come true," said Yamamoto, who threw 106 pitches. "We’re working together and doing everything as a team and it’s a great feeling."

The Arizona signee, who projects as a pick in the first 10 rounds of next month’s draft, had everything working.

His fastball topped out at 93 and he mixed in a nasty slider in the low 80s with a changeup in the mid-70s that kept Waiakea guessing at the plate.

"This is the state tournament, where you win and you advance or you lose and head to the consolation bracket, and Jordan found a way," Saint Louis coach George Gusman said. "I don’t think I’ve seen two pitchers with as much ability pitch in the same game in a long time. Jordan doesn’t throw as hard as (Medeiros) does, but I think he’s a little bit more polished at this point and I’m sure Kodi will get better command as he continues through his career."

Medeiros, who could join Waipahu’s Jerome Williams and Kamehameha’s Bronson Sardinha as the only first-round draft picks straight out of Hawaii high schools, gave up two runs on five hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.

He featured a fastball that touched 94 mph while sitting between 91 and 93 with a nasty slider in the low 80s.

"I knew it was going to be a good game because the intensity was there and the hype was really big for this game," said Medeiros, who finished at 121 pitches. "I tried to keep their hitters off balance, but missed a couple of fastballs down the middle."

Rayson Romero had the big hit for Saint Louis when he singled to shallow right-center with two outs in the fifth to score Jacob White, who walked to start the inning.

Romero, the Saint Louis leadoff hitter, had struck out in his previous at-bat before lifting Saint Louis’ second hit off Medeiros to the outfield to bring in a run.

"It was (a) 1-1 (count) and I was trying to lay off any slider or any junk so I could square up a ball," Romero said. "I looked for a fastball middle away and it showed up and I put a good swing on it."

Saint Louis added an insurance run in the sixth when Devan Stubblefield hit a chopper down the third-base line to score pinch runner Brett Uchima, who came in for Ryder Kuhns after his one-out double, which was the only extra-base hit in the game.

"We faced a very good pitcher tonight and he did a great job," first-year Waiakea coach Jensen Sato said. "Kodi’s a special player and he battled his butt off, but (Saint Louis) got a couple of runs that we didn’t and that’s the name of the game."
