Volunteers searching for a pregnant, 27-year-old missing Maui woman on Thursday discovered a sweater and skirt belonging to her.
Carly "Charli" Scott’s sisters identified the clothes found in the Peahi area as hers, said Pat Mulligan, a partner with Morey Inc., which is assisting in the search.
Last seen Sunday night by her ex-boyfriend, the Makawao woman’s disappearance touched off an extensive search conducted by police and fire helicopter personnel as well as friends, family and others.
Scott’s mother, Kimberlyn Scott, said her daughter, who is five months pregnant, does bookkeeping for the Hui, a Makawao art gallery, and interns at the Paragon Salon to be a hairstylist.
The charred shell of her Toyota 4Runner was discovered Wednesday in Peahi. Her dog, Nala, with her Sunday night, was found 20 miles away in Nahiku.
"It obviously scares the hell out of all of us," Kimberlyn Scott said.
She added, "We’re trying hard to keep our heads and not jump to conclusions. I don’t know if something happened to her," but if something did, "I want the guilty person to be punished."
Police said possible evidence found by a private search party Thursday was recovered for investigation.
Scott’s disappearance comes on the heels of another Maui woman who was also last seen by her ex-boyfriend before going missing. Moreira Monsalve, 46, was last seen Jan. 12. Her ex-boyfriend reportedly left the state and is not considered a suspect.
Scott’s ex-boyfriend and father of her unborn child, Steven Capobianco, told Hawaii News Now that police told him he failed a polygraph test. He also said he did not know what happened to Scott.
On Sunday, Capobianco said he called Scott and asked her to drive him to Keanae, near mile marker 20 along Hana Highway, to where his truck had broken down. After fixing the truck, Capobianco drove it toward Haiku, and Scott followed him. Capobianco said he lost sight of Scott’s vehicle after he sped up.
Morey Inc.’s associates have assisted with helicopters in the air search. They plan to use jet skis and boats in an ocean search Sunday if she is not found by Saturday.
Also joining the search Friday was a team with dogs and others on horseback, combing the area between mile markers 14 and 19 along Hana Highway.
