Lu wins tourney in California
Moanalua sophomore Shawn Lu won the AJGA’s Preseason Junior at Oak Valley last weekend in Beaumont, Calif.
Lu was tied for the lead after an opening 69 and won by three after shooting a final-round 73.
Lu and runner-up Joshua Sedeno had the only scores in the 60s over the weekend.
Also last weekend, state high school champion Mariel Galdiano tied for 10th at the Annika Invitational, in Reunion, Fla. The Punahou sophomore shot 76-71-73 and finished 13 back of California’s Bethany Wu.
Allisen Corpuz, another Punahou sophomore, was 44th in the international event, shooting 80-74-75.
Ching aims for Latinoamerica
A second-round 77 Wednesday left former state high school champion Alex Ching tied for 56th halfway through the PGA Tour Latinoamerica qualifier, which ends Friday in Sebring, Fla.
Ching opened with a 72 Tuesday and was tied for 20th. He is competing for one of 20 fully exempt spots available for this year’s tour. Those who finish 21st to 45th earn conditional status. There are 132 golfers in the field — 98 Americans and the rest from 14 other countries.
Ching played on the tour the past two years. This year’s tour has 16 events in 10 countries. The first swing starts Feb. 17. The top five at the end of the year earn playing status on the 2015 Web.com Tour.
At last week’s qualifier in Peru, 20 golfers from nine countries earned full-exempt status, including seven Americans.
