An international effort led to the arrest of a Kauai man for the death of an 88-year-old man, whose body was found in his Omao home on New Year’s Day.

Police said the FBI, working with the Taipei government, arrested 41-year-old Giovani Corpuz, also of Omao, on Wednesday while Corpuz was traveling to the Philippines.

Firefighters found the victim, Amby Cruz, unresponsive at his home in the early morning hours of Jan. 1 after responding to a medical call.

An autopsy on Jan. 2 found Cruz had been shot in the head.

Police opened a murder investigation and talked to friends, family and neighbors of the victim.

The investigation led to an arrest warrant for Corpuz, who is now awaiting extradition to Hawaii to face charges.
