Right beauty oil can help skin, hair and body
Facial oil was once demonized as the cause of acne and clogged pores, but the beauty world has come around to the benefits that lightweight oil blends can offer for skin, hair and body.
In the skin, for instance, ceramides, fatty acid and cholesterol reside in the outermost layer of the epidermis, preventing the loss of water and electrolytes, and preventing the entry of toxic compounds. This essential barrier is stripped away by vigorous washing but can be replaced by a light layer of oil to prevent drying. Applying the right oil to oily skin can actually help manage pore-clogging sebum. For best results, pat a small amount of oil into your palms and gently press it onto damp skin to retain moisture. Don’t rub.
Sephora is inviting all to discover the multiple benefits of beauty oils at any of its stores, through the end of the month.
Today’s beauty oils can cleanse, hydrate and offer benefits to all skin types, without leaving a heavy, greasy residue. The trick is to find the one that works for you. A few examples:
Cleansing: Josie Maran Cleansing Oil ($32) is a nongreasy blend of almond, argan, safflower seed and grape seed oils to cleanse the skin’s surface.
Hydrating: Kate Somerville Dilo Oil Restorative Treatment ($65). The fast-absorbing oil from Fiji helps to support the skin’s moisture barrier.
Radiance: Fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil ($50) is a lightweight formula comprising seaberry, cranberry seed, camellia seed, grape seed and sweet almond oils. It is packed with restorative omegas and is absorbed quickly to help maintain a youthful glow.
For hair: Dry Bar 100 Proof Treatment Oil ($35) mixes and layers easily with other hair products to bring dry, dull hair back to life without weighing it down.
For the body: Caudalie Divine Oil ($49) contains antioxidant grape polyphenols and ginkgo biloba to leave skin radiant. Use after showering, when skin is still damp.
Also, Kauai-based Malie Organics has introduced a line of moisturizing beauty oils in its five signature fragrances: Koke‘e, Pikake, Plumeria, Mango Nectar and Coconut Vanilla.
The 80 percent organic blends of macadamia, kukui nut, coconut, jojoba, grape seed, apricot, almond and avocado oils help to hydrate and nourish skin. They can be applied wet or dry on hair and skin, without clogging pores.
The oils are $45 each, available at www.malie.com. One percent of Koke‘e Beauty Oil sales will be donated to the Koke‘e Resource Conservation Program.
