Wahine finish Big West unbeaten with sweep of UC Riverside
Emily Hartong put down 13 kills and Jane Croson added 12 as No. 8 Hawaii swept UC Riverside in a Big West volleyball match tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center 25-17, 25-17, 25-23.
The Rainbow Wahine (26-2, 18-0) ran their winning streaks to 19 straight this season and a national-best 72 in conference play, including the three previous unbeaten Western Athletic Conference campaign.
A crowd of 5,920 watched as Hawaii became the first team to go undefeated in Big West play in 10 years, the last being UC Santa Barbara (18-0) in 2002. The Wahine also added to their Big West streak with their 37th in a row, dating back to the last match of 1994.
The night included senior night festivities for defensive specialist Emily Maeda. The Roosevelt High graduate had eight digs and a marriage proposal from longtime boyfriend Chad Reese.
Ashley Cox led the Highlanders (8-24, 2-16) with nine kills.
The Wahine will learn their postseason fate when the NCAA tournament bracket is announced Sunday.
