Man allegedly throws metal rods at cars
A 49-year-old Waianae man was charged Monday night with multiple counts of damaging four cars by allegedly throwing rebar at them from a construction site at the Ala Moana Center on Saturday night.
Edward Kling was charged with four counts of first-degree property damage. His bail was set at $100,000.
The suspect was arrested at Ala Moana Center at 10:30 p.m. Police said the man struck four passing vehicles with the steel rods at 9:50 p.m.
Big Isle swimmer caught in current dies
A 62-year-old Hawaii island man died Tuesday afternoon after being swept underwater in strong currents near a beach in Waipio Valley, fire and police officials said.
Police responded to the 1:35 p.m. report of a drowning.
Off-duty medical personnel tried to revive the man by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Witnesses said the man had been swept underwater by the strong currents. They found him unresponsive and pulled him to the beach.
The Hawaii Fire Department responded to the scene and took over attempts to revive the victim, but the effort was unsuccessful.
Police identified the man as James D. Barber of Puako. Police ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Driver of truck that hit pedestrians sought
Police are asking for help identifying the driver of a pickup truck who last week hit two pedestrians near Sandy Beach.
CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department said the driver was in a light-colored pickup truck and that the incident occurred at about 6:20 p.m. Thursday. Witnesses reported the driver of the pickup was speeding when attempting to leave Sandy Beach but was unable to maneuver a right turn and struck two pedestrians on the shoulder area of Kalanianaole Highway near Kealahou Street.
Police said the driver did not stop and fled toward Waimanalo. One of the pedestrians remains in the hospital with multiple fractures.
