Construction to limit parking at Haleakala
Work to improve access will begin Tuesday at the Hosmer Grove Campground parking lots at Haleakala National Park on Maui and take about a month to complete.
During construction, one of the two parking lots will be closed. Work will begin at the upper parking lot, the one closest to the main park road, then proceed to the lower parking lot (closest to the grove).
Park officials said there will always be access to area trails, the campground and at least one restroom open, but the picnic shelter will be closed while the lower lot is improved.
Improvement work in the summit area of Haleakala is scheduled through September.
Visitors and residents should expect continued heavy construction traffic on Haleakala Highway and Crater Road.

County to aid permit seekers at open house
Maui County will hold an open house Wednesday so that people seeking permits can do so easily.
The open house will provide a "one-stop shop," bringing together representatives from the county departments that sign off on building permits, including Fire, Water, Public Works, Planning and Environmental Management, officials said.
The open house will run from 1 to 3 p.m. in the mayor’s conference room on the ninth floor of the Kalana o Maui County Building.
