A 40-year-old man was in custody after military and Honolulu police chased his vehicle from the Aliamanu Military Reservation.

Police said the incident appears to have begun as a domestic abuse case involving an Army man and his wife who both live at the Moanalua military housing area.

Military police were called to the complex about 12:15 p.m. Thursday after the woman reported that her husband was acting suicidal and had fired shots into the wall of their house, said Dennis Drake, public information officer for U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii.

When they arrived, the man was in his vehicle and headed toward the Moanalua Freeway, Drake said.

Two other military police units, as well as HPD units, pursued the suspect’s vehicle east through the H-1 Freeway and Kalanianaole Highway.

At least two or three vehicles were hit during the chase but no one was injured, Drake said. 

The suspect was not armed when police arrested him, Drake said.

The man was taken to Tripler Army Medical Center where he was treated, then to a Fort Shafter military police facility, and back to Tripler, Drake said.

Honolulu police said the man is being investigated for domestic abuse, reckless endangering and first-degree criminal property damage.

Honolulu police shut down Kalanianaole Highway in both directions between Hanauma Bay and Halona Blow Hole from about 1 p.m. to just shortly before 2 p.m. as officers investigated.

Drake said the man is a soldier, but declined to say in which unit.
