PAGO PAGO, American Samoa » A court in American Samoa is allowing a former teacher convicted of raping a 13-year-old student to work at a church while he serves a two-year prison term.

The High Court of American Samoa last week ruled Tone Pulou may leave prison from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. He’s earning money to pay his victim $100 a month in child support for his son.

The Congregational Christian Church of American Samoa has hired the 27-year-old as a janitor.

The court sentenced Pulou to 28 months in prison in June. He pleaded guilty to rape in a deal with prosecutors.

Pulou was arrested at a McDonald’s restaurant in Honolulu last year. He must also reimburse American Samoa for his extradition costs.
