One way or another, a streak was bound to end when the Hawaii women’s basketball team visited Cal State Bakersfield on Tuesday.
In the end, the host Roadrunners held off a UH rally to remain perfect on their home court with a 78-69 victory while handing the Rainbow Wahine their first road loss of the season.
UH (6-5) entered the nonconference game at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield, Calif., 3-0 on the road and took a 42-37 lead into halftime. CSUB (9-3) pushed ahead early in the second half and broke away with a 13-point run to extend its lead to 70-58 lead with 6:44 left.
The Wahine answered with an 11-2 run and closed to within three when Briana Harris scored while drawing a foul and completed a three-point play with 1:39 left.
But CSUB’s Tyonna Outland scored on a driving layup and the Roadrunners pulled away again in the final minute to improve to 7-0 at home.
The loss left UH with a split of its pre-Christmas road trip and the most striking contrast from Saturday’s win at Loyola Marymount came from the free-throw line. After making 30 of 36 attempts against LMU, the Wahine went 5-for-11 on Tuesday while CSUB was 16 of 17.
"You have to hit free throws when you’re on the road. When you don’t it really affects you and it affected us today," UH coach Laura Beeman said. "We couldn’t get (to the free-throw line) and when we were there those few times, we couldn’t capitalize."
Destiny King led the Rainbow Wahine with a career-high 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Ashleigh Karaitiana posted her second double-double of the season with 13 points and a career-best 12 rebounds.
Morgan Mason scored 10 of her 12 points in the first half and dished out eight assists, another career high, before leaving the game with an injury in the second half. Harris scored a season-high 10 points with five rebounds.
Shawna-Lei Kuehu was limited to 14 minutes due to an injury. She played nine minutes in the first half and sat out most of the second before returning late in the game. She finished with four points and three rebounds.
