HPU earns 4 national tennis awards
Hawaii Pacific University’s men’s and women’s teams earned four Intercollegiate Tennis Association awards Tuesday.
Celina Goetti received the NCAA’s Elite 89 Award, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA at the national championship. Goetti boasts a 3.96 GPA and is also HPU’s female scholar athlete of the year.
The ITA named sophomore Jaume Martinez-Vich, who is currently ranked No. 15 in both singles and doubles, the national player to watch. Martinez-Vich has a 15-3 singles record and a 20-0 doubles record with partner Mattis Wetzel.
Two HPU coaches, Joan Costa and Pierre Tafelski, received national assistant coach of the year honors. Costa has been with the program under men’s head coach Hendrik Bode for two seasons, and Pierre Tafelski is in his second season under women’s head coach Lauren Conching.
