BYUH to host volleyball regional
They won their conference. They were ranked first in the west region.
But nothing is ever a given when it comes to the NCAA awarding a Hawaii school hosting duties for a regional.
It happened Sunday when the sixth-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii Seasiders were awarded the NCAA Division II West Regional women’s volleyball tournament. The top-seeded Seasiders (21-3) will host the eight-team regional Nov. 29-Dec. 1 at the Cannon Activities Center.
BYUH, the PacWest champion at 16-0, opens with eighth-seeded UC San Diego (20-10). The other matches are: PacWest rival Grand Canyon (23-6), the second seed, facing No. 7 seed San Francisco State (21-8); No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino (22-8) against No. 6 Central Washington (21-7); and No. 4 Western Washington (23-3) against No. 5 Sonoma State (22-8).
The regional winner advances to the elite eight Dec. 6 in Pensacola, Fla. The semifinals are Dec. 7 and the final is Dec. 8.
BYUH last won the national championship in 2002. The Seasiders have won 10 national titles (NAIA and NCAA Division II) dating back to 1986.
Choi wins final LPGA Tour event of the year
NAPLES, Fla. » If nothing else, Na Yeon Choi proved to be a big-money player this year on the LPGA Tour.
Choi captured her first major this summer at the U.S. Women’s Open, the biggest purse of the year. She turned a great season into her best one yet Sunday by winning the Titleholders and a $500,000 check, the second-biggest prize on tour.
For someone who has an appointment today in Orlando to buy a new house, the timing couldn’t have been better.
"I think I can buy bigger than I thought," Choi said.
Hawaii’s Michelle Wie climbed to a tie for 62nd by closing with a 69 that left her 24 strokes off the pace
