Stylist Therese Wahl can usually be found working with young and up-and-coming local designers, but she’s spent three months zipping to Goodwill stores throughout Oahu to pull together looks for the annual Goodwill Goes GLAM! fashion show taking place July 16 at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.

Designer Kini Zamora, producer of this year’s fashion show, tapped Wahl to help pull and style the 60 looks to be shown on the runway.

Typical of a thrifting expedition, Wahl said she didn’t know what she would find, but was pleasantly surprised to discover more than enough to fit in with Zamora’s theme, "A Day in the Life of a Royal."

"I like antiquing and finding things, so it’s been fun," Wahl said. "I’ve found some gems. I was surprised to find as many minks and furs as there are here, but I guess people travel or move and don’t want or need them anymore, and that’s a big part of our story. I like to see fashion upcycled or redone.

"Some people are against furs, but if it’s vintage and old, you’re giving it another life, so it’s not a waste."

The fashion show kicks off a three-day Goodwill shopping event, July 17-19. A ticket to the fashion show includes access to a preview sale featuring more than 40,000 pieces pulled from Goodwill stores. Tickets are $21.49, available through Eventbrite at higoodwill.org/glam. Admission to the public sale is $4 per day, or $2 per day with pre-sale tickets available at Goodwill stores. 

The annual event helps fund Goodwill’s nonprofit job training programs. Last year’s event raised $220,000, making it possible for the agency to serve more than 12,000 individuals, including placing more than 1,700 people into jobs.

Zamora’s story will focus on a day in the life of a princess and her prince, with eight segments that break down into themes such as "World Traveler," "Party Like It’s 1999," "Boho Garden Party," "Belle of the Ball" and "Wedding Bliss."

The bridal segment will feature cas­ual to dramatic looks "with a twist," said Wahl. "People who don’t have the money to buy wedding dresses will be surprised. There isn’t a wedding dress over $100."

The show promises to be colorful and entertaining, as well as inspiring for those in need of ideas for pulling together daily ensembles, from business to evening wear, on a budget. And if you spot a look you love, outfits from the fashion show will be up for auction.
