Those faded puka T-shirts and sloppy gym shorts may be considered OK for dads lounging at home or boys roughing it on the weekends, but the men of the house have got to clean up sometime. Father’s Day provides the perfect occasion to swap out some of those old togs for new clothing that’s crisper and easier on the eyes.

Dads draw strength from what they know and what is familiar so don’t bother trying to change their style. But a cleaner look might catch the judges’ eyes when the Hawai‘i Coalition for Dads presents its free 17th annual Father’s Day event at Windward Mall’s Center Court from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 20. (Father’s Day is Sunday, June 21.) The family event recognizing dads, grandfathers and other father figures will feature entertainment, arts-and-crafts activities and a father-and-child look-alike contest.

Entrants of any age and assorted family pairings are welcome, including grandfather-grandchild duos and fathers with more than one child. The contest starts at 1 p.m., with the deadline to enter at 12:30 p.m. near the Center Court stage area. An entry form is available by visiting humanservices.hawaii.gov/fatherhood.

Business competition focuses on kids

Kids will also have their day at Windward Mall, which will host the 4th annual Kids Inc., a young entrepreneurs pop-up from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 25.

The application deadline is June 29 for keiki ages 6 to 15 to submit their business plans at facebook.com/WindwardMall. Children 12 and younger will need a parent or guardian to submit their entry.

Shoppers are encouraged to check the mall’s Facebook page between June 30 and July 13 to vote for the business they would like to see up and running. The 12 business plans with the most votes will be announced July 14, with the winners getting an opportunity to bring their money-making ideas to life.

Participants may offer a service, create a product from scratch, or resell a product purchased from a wholesaler. Businesses should have minimal parental involvement so children can enjoy the opportunity to learn about business and entrepreneurship. Participants will keep 

100 percent of their earnings.
