Gala benefits Adult Friends for Youth
Las Vegas trips, Napa wine adventures and a Notre Dame football helmet signed by Manti Te’o and his teammates are among the items up for bid at Adult Friends for Youth’s 26th annual Celebration of Youth fundraiser Friday at the Sheraton Waikiki.
The agency has been providing therapeutic intervention, prevention, education and support services to troubled youths and gang members since 1985, helping them to redirect their lives.
Among its success stories is Reiner Dela Cruz, who was referred to Adults Friends for Youth by Waipahu High School because of his constant fighting. His violent behavior landed him in the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility. With the help of counselors who worked with him for several years during high school and after graduation, Dela Cruz managed to straighten out his life and is now a married father of two who is undergoing basic training in the Hawaii Air National Guard, according to AFY.
Lio Soa was an oft-suspended student at Campbell High School when he received assistance from AFY. By his senior year he had become a captain on the football team and got a scholarship to play football at a junior college on the mainland, the agency said. Soa now works with Hawaiian Airlines as a baggage handler.
The dinner celebration will honor community philanthropist Carolyn Berry with AFY’s 2012 Service to Hawaii’s Youth Award.
Berry has served on the agency’s board for more than 10 years and is an ardent supporter of the agency both financially and personally, sharing her advice and contacts and offering her home for special events, according to AFY.
Tickets to the fundraiser are $250 for individuals and $2,500 for tables of 10, with a portion of the cost tax-deductible. Frank De Lima and Jordan Segundo will entertain.
