Campbell’s Kahaloa to sign with the Cincinnati Reds
Recent Campbell High graduate Ian Kahaloa confirmed via text message on Thursday night he has decided to sign a professional contract with the Cincinnati Reds.
The 6-foot-1 right-hander, who was selected in the fifth round (No. 145 overall) in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday, will fly to Arizona on Friday to meet with the team to sign pending a physical.
Kahaloa, who had signed with Hawaii but was expected to go the professional route, was the first of nine players taken in this week’s draft with local ties.
He was also committed to San Jacinto (Tex.) Community College.
The Star-Advertiser state player of the year went 5-0 with a 0.16 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 44 innings this season.
Financial terms of the pending deal were not disclosed. The slot value for the No. 145 overall pick was $369,400.
