HPU men edge Point Loma Nazarene
All five starters scored in double figures, led by Justin Long’s 19, as Hawaii Pacific held off Point Loma Nazarene 79-74 in a Pacific West Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday at the Blaisdell Arena.
HPU improved to 10-2 overall and 5-2 in the PacWest. The Sea Lions are 9-5 and 4-3.
Long hit all 14 of his free throws, an HPU record.
In women’s play:
» Skye Savini hit a jump shot with seven seconds to play and finished with a game-high 30 points to lift Hawaii Pacific (8-4, 4-2) to a 79-78 victory over Point Loma Nazarene (6-6, 4-4) at the Blaisdell Arena. Morganne Comstock had a school-record 21 rebounds in the game for HPU.
» Krystal Forthan had 24 points and Molly O’Brien added 20 as Academy of Art (10-5, 7-0) routed Chaminade (1-10, 1-4) 120-69 at McCabe Gym. Kennedi Akana led the Silverswords with a career-high 20 points.
» Dominican (2-12, 2-6) defeated Brigham-Young Hawaii (0-10, 0-5) 80-65 in Laie. Danna Lynn Hooper had 18 points while Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Seasiders.
UH divers dominate Hawaii Invitational
Hawaii sophomores Amund Gismervik of Norway and Aimee Harrison of Canada won individual titles Wednesday, the opening day of the two-day Hawaii Diving Invitational at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Gismervik won the 1-meter with a personal best of 376.65 points, more than 55 points better than runner-up Andrew Schula of Wisconsin. Harrison won the women’s 3-meter with a score of 322.70, while teammate Lauren Hall, a sophomore from Georgia, was second with 305.90.
Competition begins at 11 a.m. today for the women’s 1-meter, the men’s 3-meter and the platform dives.
Other teams competing include Columbia, Nebraska and Minnesota State-Mankato.
Gatorade honors Seabury Hall’s Grossman
Dakota Grossman of Seabury Hall has been named the Gatorade Hawaii girls cross country runner of the year.
The senior, who won four straight individual titles, is a finalist for the national award, which will be announced later this month.
