Q-and-A will follow documentary screening
Five University of Hawaii physicists will hold a question-and-answer session after the showing of the documentary "Particle Fever" Friday night at Kahala Mall.
The acclaimed documentary is about subatomic particle physics in general and specifically covers the search for the Higgs boson, sometimes called the "God particle."
The physicists are Veronica Bindi, Tom Browder, Jason Kumar, Xerxes Tata and Sven Vahsen, all with the UH-Manoa Department of Physics and Astronomy.
The panel session will begin at 9:30 p.m., just after the 7:40 p.m. show.
"Particle Fever," directed by physicist-turned-filmmaker Mark Levinson, follows six scientists during the 2008 launch of the Large Hadron Collider, a particle accelerator built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Switzerland.
The goal was to re-create conditions that existed just moments after the big bang, potentially explaining the origin of all matter, according to the film’s website.
The Higgs particle was confirmed by data from the collider in 2013.

Driver dies in accident
The 54-year-old male driver of a Toyota Camry died Thursday in a Hawaii island crash involving a flatbed Ford delivery truck.
Police Sgt. Christopher Gali said the Camry drifted over the centerline and sideswiped the truck.
The victim’s mother, who was a passenger in the Camry, was taken to the hospital with no significant injuries, Gali said.
The truck driver, who was the sole occupant of the truck, was uninjured.
Police shut down Hawaii Belt Road (Highway 19) near the 9-mile marker at about 2:12 p.m.
The accident occurred at about 1:53 p.m.
Fire personnel also responded to the accident.
Traffic was detoured to Old Mamalahoa Highway, the Fire Department said.
Man rescued from high river
Hawaii island fire rescue personnel had to swim to an island in the Wailuku River late Thursday afternoon to rescue an 18-year-old man stranded there.
The Fire Department responded to the 5:07 p.m. alarm, and crews were on scene at 5:17 p.m. at Ululani Street and Wailuku Drive.
Rescue personnel used rope tethers and swift-water equipment and techniques to bring the man to shore in very high water.
The man was uninjured and refused further medical and evaluation or transport.
The Fire Department launched a helicopter and five other companies, using 11 firefighters in the rescue.
