LCC gets $100,000 culinary scholarship
Leeward Community College is the recipient of the $100,000 Nobuye Horio Culinary Scholarship Endowment.
The scholarship, presented by Ruby and Paul Mizue on behalf of Horio’s estate, is designated for local high-school graduates entering the college’s culinary program.
Horio, Ruby’s aunt, was born Nobuye Sato in Waipahu and graduated from Farrington High School in 1941. Though she had no formal training, she built a career in the culinary field.
She worked with her sisters at the Sato family’s saimin stand through World War II, then moved on to numerous restaurants, including Michel’s, Woolworth’s lunch counter and Tropics Restaurant, where she was in charge of making the famous dressing that lines grocery shelves today.
Those interested in contributing gifts to the college can visit uhfoundation.org/givetolcc.
