The Hawaii Paroling Authority has set a 130-year minimum sentence for freeway shooter Toby Stangel.
HPA Administrator Tommy Johnson said the parole board issued its decision in a notice sent to Stangel last month.
The board set Stangel’s minimum mandatory sentence for second-degree murder at 50 years and at 40 years for each of two counts of second-degree attempted murder. He won’t be eligible for parole until May 2141.
Stangel, 31, will be able to apply for a reduction in his minimum sentence, but that can’t happen until he is 87.
He is currently serving his time at Saguaro Correctional Center in Eloy, Ariz.
Circuit Judge Glenn Kim sentenced Stangel to three consecutive life prison terms in August. On June 3, 2011, Stangel killed Tammy Nguyen, 54, of Palolo; shot at three other motorists, injuring two of them; and shot at two Honolulu police officers at a traffic stop.
