4,000-gallon sewage spill reported at Lahaina plant
The Maui County Department of Environmental Management reported a 4,000-gallon sewage spill Friday at the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility on North Honoapiilani Highway.
The overflow was due to a mechanical failure at the plant headworks building, officials said in a news release Tuesday. The overflow started at 9:30 a.m. and was stopped by 9:45 a.m.
Waste water flowed from the building to the adjacent grassy area at the facility and was contained within the treatment plant property, according to the release. The plant’s crew cleaned and disinfected the area. The spill did not reach any waterways; no beach closures are required.
