UH’s Brashears named to All-Big West first team; Torres-Costa makes second team
Hawaii right-hander Tyler Brashears was named to the All-Big West Conference first team on Tuesday while left-handed reliever Quintin Torres-Costa made the second team.
Reliever Andrew Jones, designated hitter Alex Sawelson and shortstop Jacob Sheldon-Collins all earned honorable mention honors.
Brashears, a junior, finished second in ERA in seven conference games at 1.59, trailing only Cal State Fullerton junior Thomas Eshelman (1.57). Brashears won five of his seven starts with two losses and struck out 38 in 56 2/3 innings.
Brashears is the first UH player in three years in the Big West Conference to make the first team and was 8-5 with a 1.86 ERA overall this season.
Torres-Costa, a sophomore, did not allow a run in 18 1/3 innings in conference play and led the league with eight saves. He allowed nine hits and nine walks with 24 strikeouts, averaging 11.78 strikeouts per nine innings, which was third among relievers.
Jones went 1-1 with a save and a 2.20 ERA in 16 1/3 innings in conference play with 13 strikeouts.

Sheldon-Collins, who led Hawaii overall with a .295 batting average, hit .316 in 24 league games with three doubles, two triples and 11 runs scored.
Sawelson hit .303 in league play with seven doubles, a triple and 13 RBIs.
Hawaii finished .500 in conference for the first time time at 12-12, marking a six-game improvement from last season.
