Neither could shift the University of Hawaii softball team’s fortunes on Saturday.
UH’s Big West skid reached seven games as Cal Poly claimed both ends of a doubleheader on "Power in Pink" day at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium and completed a series sweep.
The Mustangs weathered two UH comebacks in the late innings and clinched the series win with a 7-6 victory in eight innings in the first game. Cal Poly then closed out the sweep with a 4-1 win in the finale.
While Cal Poly (25-16, 7-5 Big West) picked up ground in the conference race, closing to three games behind Long Beach State, UH (19-22, 4-8) heads to UC Santa Barbara tied for sixth and looking to claw back to .500 with nine games left.
"You just have to remember we’re playing for each other," UH catcher Kayla Wartner said. "We’re a team and we play as a team and we play for our team. We’re just trying to stay positive as best we can and keep up the positive attitudes and eventually something will fall our way."
After opening the series with a 6-4 loss on Friday, UH coach Bob Coolen shook up the batting order on Saturday, moving Jazmine Zamora into the leadoff spot for the first time in 32 games and shifting Wartner to second after she hit fifth the previous 15 games.
Cal Poly took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning of the first game on back-to-back home runs by Courtney Tyler and Sierra Hyland. Leisha Li’ili’i led off the bottom of the sixth with an opposite-field home run to tie the game, but the Mustangs ran off four consecutive two-out hits in the top of the seventh to take a 6-3 lead.
Wartner tied the game again with a three-run shot with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning.
"I went up there and swung at it and tried not to think about anything and just hit," Wartner said.
UH left two runners on base in the seventh to extend the game into the eighth and Cal Poly again struck with two outs. Emily Ceccacci drilled a single up the middle to score Jillian Andersen from second with the go-ahead run. In all, the Mustangs scored 12 runs with two outs in the series.
"We did a great job offensively with two outs and our defense helped us out," Cal Poly coach Jenny Condon said. "Our pitchers got into binds every now again, but we just played to win and with great energy the whole weekend."
Hyland retired UH in order in the eighth to earn her second win of the series and raise her record to 21-7. Heather Morales (9-8) also went the distance in the loss.
Cal Poly’s Chloe Wurst held UH without a hit for 41/3 innings in the second game. She gave up six singles in the last two innings but allowed just one run.
Cal Poly gave her all the offense she needed in the second inning when Andersen beat out a grounder to second base — again with two out — and two runners came around to score on the infield single.
UH strung together three consecutive singles in the sixth. But Cal Poly threw a runner out at the plate for the second out of the inning and kept the shutout going into the seventh.
Hawaii pitcher Loie Kesterson gave up nine hits, struck out one and walked one while falling to 10-11.
