Hilo’s Carvalho lights it up
Hilo’s Jalen Carvalho showed signs of breaking out this month, but nothing really pointed to a 47-point outburst in a 67-65 overtime win over Waiakea on Saturday.
The 6-foot-3 guard’s scoring barrage included two clutch shots. His putback tied the score at the regulation buzzer to force overtime. Then he hit a 3-pointer to win the game at the end of the extra period.
Carvalho had big games in the past few weeks: 27 points and 12 rebounds in a 57-55 win over Kealakehe; 28 points in a 57-39 victory over Keaau; 24 points in a 64-53 win over Kohala; 31 points and 10 boards in a 67-59 loss to Trinity Christian (Texas).
Carvalho made 21 of his 24 free-throw tries against Waiakea as the Vikings won the Cardinal Classic title. He averaged 30.7 points per game in the tourney.
Kailua needed all of Williams’ 44 points
The best part of Kailua’s thrilling triple-overtime 94-90 win over Kaiser on Friday wasn’t just about a victory.
Coach Mandy Llamedo was happy to see one of her sophomores step up in a big way. Delcie Williams poured in 44 points, coming through on a night when classmate Patria Vaimoana struggled with fouls.
Williams, an athletic, penetration swingman, was back to the level of play she demonstrated during a recent tournament on Maui.
"It was unreal how she was playing there. Then she came back and she was OK," Llamedo said. "But now she understands that responsibility to have the ball in her hands."
Keala Kaio-Perez scored 18 points and hit the only two treys of the game, and point guard Tara Takata added 12 points for the surging Surfriders, who are now 4-1. Winning on the road against a proven program was a double bonus.
"All the work the girls put in, it felt really good. We struggle against Kaiser every year," Llamedo said. "We knew Delcie was capable of taking control of games like that since she was a freshman, but I had no idea that she was on her way to 44. It wasn’t like she was going out of her way. It was so natural."
Williams was superb at the foul line, sinking 22 of 26 attempts (85 percent).
Kaiser’s Chantelle Arce scored 37, including six treys, in the loss. Guard Roselyn Shimaoka had 29 points.
The single-game high this season in girls basketball is 45 points by Konawaena sophomore Chanelle Molina in a win over Ka‘u.
