Seven local high school graduates on five teams will play in the NCAA baseball regionals beginning Friday.
Oklahoma State second baseman Tim Arakawa, a 2011 Moanalua High alumnus, helped the Cowboys earn a regional hosting bid in Stillwater, Okla.
Arakawa finished third on the team with a .291 average, starting 54 of 55 games for the Cowboys, who were 37-18 overall and 18-6 in the Big 12.
The Cowboys lost to Texas in the Big 12 tournament final but held onto a regional hosting bid with an RPI of 12.
Arakawa also had 10 doubles, three triples, a homer and 35 RBIs and led the team with 48 runs scored. He stole 10 bases and made only three errors for a .990 fielding percentage.
The senior was named second-team All-Big 12.
Arakawa could meet up with Arkansas junior Rick Nomura, a 2012 Punahou alumnus, this weekend.
Nomura started 42 games and appeared in 49 total for the Razorbacks (35-22), hitting .312 with nine doubles, a triple, four homers and 37 runs scored.
He scored the winning run in the opening game of the SEC tournament for the fifth-seeded Razorbacks, who beat Tennessee 2-1 on a walk-off hit and advanced to the fourth day before losing to Florida.
Arkansas earned the No. 2 seed in the Stillwater regional and will play No. 3 seed Oral Roberts on Friday. OSU will take on fourth-seeded St. John’s.
Oregon State freshmen K.J. Harrison (Punahou) and Christian Donahue (‘Iolani) helped the Beavers earn the No. 2 seed in the Dallas regional.
Oregon State (38-16-1), which will make a school-record seventh consecutive postseason appearance, will play No. 3 seed Texas, while host Dallas Baptist faces No. 4 seed VCU.
Harrison hit a team-high 10 homers and drove in 58 runs while hitting .314 for the Beavers, who finished second in the Pac-12 at 19-10-1.
Harrison started every game and also had 12 doubles, three triples and scored 39 runs while slugging .543.
Donahue started 44 of the 48 games he appeared in and hit .294 with six doubles, a triple and 33 runs scored. He stole nine bases and had a .363 on-base percentage.
Oregon used a late-season run to sneak into the tournament as a No. 3 seed in Springfield, Mo.
The Ducks (37-23) won two of three against Pac-12 champion UCLA to end the season and won nine of 10 overall to clinch their fourth straight tournament appearance.
Oregon will face No. 2 seed Iowa, followed by top seed Missouri State against Canisius.
Sophomore shortstop Mark Karaviotis, a 2013 Maui High alumnus, started 52 games and hit .252 with nine double, three triples and 22 runs scored.
He hit his first collegiate home run in Saturday’s 5-4 win over the second-ranked Bruins in 11 innings.
Despite finishing 30-27 overall and 17-10 in West Coast Conference play, Pepperdine got hot to win its conference tournament and secure an automatic berth to the tournament.
The Waves are the fourth seed in the Fullerton regional and will play top seed and Big West champion Cal State Fullerton on Friday in the opener.
Senior Kolten Yamaguchi, a 2011 Konawaena alumnus, started 36 games at catcher and designated hitter for Pepperdine and hit .252 with five doubles, four homers and 19 RBIs.
Yamaguchi homered in an 8-7 win over Brigham Young in the WCC tourney opener and then went deep again in a 4-2 victory over LMU in the title game.
Freshman Bo Coolen (Punahou) appeared in one game for the Waves, throwing a scoreless ninth inning without allowing a hit against Hawaii.
Fullerton and UCSB were the only two Big West teams to make the tournament and are both hosting regionals.
UCSB is the one seed but is playing in Lake Elsinore, Calif., because the Gauchos don’t have lights in their home park.
UC Irvine, which advanced to the College World Series last year and finished 33-23 overall and 15-9 in conference play, was left out.
