Haleiwa’s Joel Centeio won the Local Motion Surf Into Summer Pro on Sunday in 5-foot waves at Ala Moana Bowls.
Centeio won the four-man final with a two-wave score of 13.25. Haleiwa’s Sunny Garcia was second with a 12.9, Hana’s Hank Gaskell finished third with an 11.5 and Lihue’s Kaimana Jaquias finished fourth with a 6.15.
Centeio also posted the highest scores in the quarterfinals (17.05) and semifinals (16.6).
"This is by far the best Bowls I’ve ever surfed," Centeio was quoted as saying in a World Surfing League media release. "The waves were insane the whole time."
Molokai Challenge surfski event Saturday
The Maui Jim Molokai Challenge surfski event, from Kaluakoi, Molokai to Hawaii Kai, will take place Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m.
The Kanaka Ikaika Racing Association event, which has a $15,000 purse, will also have an OC-1 solo division and stand-up paddleboard relay division.
The event will feature competitors from Hawaii and other states, plus South Africa, Japan, Australia, Tahiti, New Zealand, Europe, Brazil and Thailand.
The first finishers are expected to complete the race at around 1:45 p.m.
Yamaguchi claims track coaching honor
Occidental College’s Tyler Yamaguchi, a 2002 Punahou School graduate, was named the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division III West Region assistant coach of the year.
Yamaguchi, who coaches the sprints, is in his eighth year with the Tigers.
The Occidental men’s track and field team finished 27th in the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships last week.
