Just three days after the prized koa canoe they were to race with was demolished in a vehicle collision, Pa‘a Pono Miloli‘i — a small club representing a South Kona fishing village — still came up golden in Saturday’s Kailana Regatta in Hilo Bay.
The upstart club was borrowing a racing canoe, Keahonui, from builder Bill Rosehill as the craftsman worked on the club’s own 90-year-old koa canoe, Malolo.
Valued at upwards of $100,000, the 400-plus pound, 45-foot Keahonui was smashed and splintered along with the organization’s canoe trailer when a motorist crashed into the back of a club member’s truck as it hauled the vessel along Mamalahoa Highway from the island’s south side to Hilo. The truck was also totaled.
Public support for the burgeoning club was apparent, as both Kai ‘Ehitu and Hui Wa‘a O Waiakea canoe clubs allowed Miloli‘i to borrow canoes so that its paddlers could race on Saturday. Pa‘a Pono Miloli‘i rallied as a club to win the half-mile men’s novice B event for the third consecutive week while also finishing second and fifth in the women’s novice B and mixed novice B races.
“We’re from a small village, so for our paddlers to receive this type of attention has really helped build their confidence,” said Kaiali‘i Kahele, executive director of Pa‘a Pono Miloli‘i. “My focus now is working to replace the equipment we lost.”
The club has additional information on its website, paaponomilolii.org, about ways for the public to aid in rebuilding Keahonui and assisting the organization. According to Kahele, more than $2,000 has already been raised thanks in part to a social media campaign that went viral and solicited donations from as far away as Alaska.
