With five of its golfers in the top seven, Moanalua leads the field after the first day of the David Ishii Foundation/ HHSAA boys state championships.
Moanalua’s John Oda and Mid-Pacific’s Zackary Kaneshiro both shot 3-under 69s to top the leaderboard after Wednesday’s first round at Turtle Bay’s Fazio Course.
Kaneshiro had six birdies. Oda, the 2012 individual champion, had five birdies.
Moanalua’s Brent Grant is third at 71 and Kyosuke Hara is fourth at 72. Teammates Shawn Lu and Desmond Mello are a stroke behind at 73. Each team’s top four golfers contribute to the team score.
Na Menehune lead the team standings at 285, 12 strokes ahead of second-place Punahou. Baldwin is third at 316. Moanalua won its only team title in 2012. Punahou is the defending champion.
There were four eagles in the first round. Donny Hopoi of Kamehameha and Howard Covington of Punahou both eagled the par-5 12th hole
Mililani’s Matthew Kikuyama eagled the par-4 first hole and Kapaa’s Bryden Salvador eagled the par-4 16th.
The second and final round starts at 7 a.m. Thursday.
