Maui man killed when truck crashes into tree
Speed appears to be a factor in a crash that killed a 30-year-old man Sunday night in Paia.
Maui police identified the victim as Kawika Kahakauwila, of Paia.
Police said Kahakauwila was driving a black 1996 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck west on Baldwin Ave. when he lost control of the truck and crashed into a tree at about 9:26 p.m.
Kahakauwila was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing seatbelts and the vehicle’s air bags did not deploy, police said.
Police are still investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
The death is the 11th traffic fatality on Maui this year, compared to 8 at the same time last year.
