With some good news Monday and a long break ahead, Hawaii coach Benjy Taylor hopes his team is close to full strength by its next game.
Upon UH’s return from its 90-70 loss to BYU in Salt Lake City, swingman Negus Webster-Chan’s right ankle injury came back as a standard sprain in X-ray testing without significant damage, Taylor said.
"Sprained ankle. The X-rays were negative, so that’s all we care about," he said. "We’re not too concerned about it. Swelling’s going to go down. Should be good to go next week."
UH (7-3) does not play again until facing Chaminade (3-4) at the Blaisdell Arena on Dec. 19, by far the Rainbow Warriors’ biggest gap between games on the 2014-15 schedule.
"Yeah, we need a break," Taylor said. "It’s going to be a good time for us to rest, get in the books and get back in the gym. We have some things that need to be taken care of."
Webster-Chan came down awkwardly on his right foot during layup-line drills a handful of minutes before tipoff against the Cougars at the Utah Jazz’s EnergySolutions Arena on Saturday. The ankle swelled up on him quickly and he was not able to take the floor, forcing backup point guard Quincy Smith into the starting lineup in his stead.
Taylor lamented the absence of Webster-Chan, who would have defended BYU guard Kyle Collinsworth. Collinsworth ended up going for a triple-double — the third allowed in UH history, all since February 2012.
"This has never happened to me in my 20-something years of coaching, where you lose a starter from the game in warmups. It was just a crazy situation," Taylor said. "Somebody threw him a lob in the layup line and he came down off the rim funny. … (Athletic trainer) Jay Goo did a great job with him and everything, but when I saw it, it had already swollen up on him. It would have been tough for him to try to play."
Taylor was cautiously optimistic the 6-foot-7 Webster-Chan, the team’s fourth-leading scorer (9.2 points per game), will be available for Chaminade.
"Jay’s on top of it. Guys have bounced back pretty quickly with Jay. We’ll see," he said.
Tickets for the Chaminade game are on sale at Ticketmaster.com and the Blaisdell Center box office.
