A California developer plans to build a 150-room business hotel in Kapolei, adding to the growing "Second City" and establishing what would be the first nonresort hotel in West Oahu.
Irvine, Calif.-based R.D. Olson Development plans the project on 3.5 acres next to the state Judiciary complex in downtown Kapolei that it has arranged to buy from an affiliate of the James Campbell Co.
Steve Kelly, vice president of development for Campbell affiliate Kapolei Properties LLC that is selling the land, discussed the project Friday at a West Oahu Economic Development Association conference.
After the meeting, Kelly said there is no timetable for the hotel yet.
"It’s very early on," he said.
R.D. Olson is an experienced hotel developer which has done work in Hawaii before. The company was a joint-venture partner with Alexander & Baldwin Inc. in developing the Courtyard by Marriott hotel in Kahului in 2012. The company is currently developing a Residence Inn by Marriott in Wailea, Maui.
And a construction affiliate of the company did renovation work on the Waikiki Edition hotel, now known as The Modern Honolulu.
