Wahine basketball signs two in spring

Hawaii women’s basketball coach Laura Beeman told the Star-Advertiser on Wednesday she has signed two players during the spring signing period for the 2014-15 season.

Both are transfer players with significant size and Division I experience.

The first is 6-3 forward Brianna Kennedy of Loyola Marymount University. The 6-foot-3 Kennedy played in 24 games as a sophomore for LMU, starting one game for a team that went 9-21. She averaged 1.1 points and 2.0 rebounds in 10.6 minutes per game. She shot 12-for-17 (44.4 percent) from the field.

Kennedy will have to redshirt a season as a transfer from one Division I school to another, per NCAA rules. After redshirting, she will have two seasons of eligibility.

The second player is 6-4 center Rachel Morris of Salt Lake Community College, who played at Utah as a true freshman.

Morris appeared in 26 games with one start as a true freshman at Utah. She averaged 7.4 minutes, 1.1 points 1.3 rebounds per game. She tallied 11 blocks and shot 12-for-25 (48 percent).

At SLCC, Morris put up 12.3 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in 25.2 minutes per game. She shot 60.2 percent from the field and 54.5 percent from the line.

Morris will have two years of eligibility.

Beeman added a third player is in the process of signing but the team hadn’t received her final paperwork yet, so she could not yet be named. That player is expected to fill the team’s scholarship allotment of 15.

The Wahine also signed four players in the fall signing period.
