Border Patrol agent charged with murder in off-duty shooting

HEMET, Calif. » A U.S. Border Patrol agent who shot an unarmed man in Southern California while off-duty has been charged with murder.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise says John Demery was charged Thursday and remains jailed on $1 million bail.

Riverside County prosecutors say Demery shot 27-year-old Adam Thomas on Saturday at a neighbor’s home in East Hemet.

Prosecutors say Demery was upset about some cars that had been speeding in his neighborhood and believed Thomas was involved.

Authorities claim he grabbed a gun, went to the house where Demery was staying, and shot the unarmed man several times during an argument.

The paper says Demery’s attorney, Amy Gordon, declined to comment.

Demery is a six-year veteran of the Border Patrol assigned to the Murrieta station.
