Sharice Kawakami scored eight of her game-high 16 points in the fourth quarter as Roosevelt pulled away from Kailua for a 65-48 win on Tuesday at the Rough Riders’ gym.
Roosevelt improved to 2-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East (8-3 overall). Kailua, which got 12 points each from Patria Vaimoana and Taufau Williams, opened the regular season with a 58-37 win over Kalaheo last week but dropped to 1-1.
Senior Devyn Kauhi added 12 points, 11 rebounds and six steals, and Starr Rivera tallied 11 points.
The Surfriders made it a battle, lagging behind the speedy Rough Riders but keeping the margin within single digits most of the night. Kailua’s 1-2-2 zone had an effect, limiting Roosevelt’s sharpshooters to 3-for-21 accuracy (14 percent) from behind the 3-point line.
It was a gamble that Kailua coach Mandy Llamedo was willing to take.
“We saw what they did against Kaiser,” she said, referring to the Rough Riders’ blowout win last week.
Despite 26 turnovers, Kailua did a reasonably effective job against Roosevelt’s press, enough to cause the home team to retreat in the second half.
“No. 12 did a good job pushing the ball,” Roosevelt coach Hinano Higa said of Surfriders point guard Tara Takata, who had nine of her 11 points in the second half. “For the most part, we dropped back to see what was coming at us and get some loose balls.”
The visitors never led, but outrebounded Roosevelt 42-29 to stay close. After falling behind by 11 at the break — Roosevelt reserve guard Ashley Kiko hit a 3-point buzzer-beater — they pulled within 36-31 on a mid-range jumper by Keala Kaio-Perez midway through the third quarter.
Kailua was still in close range early in the fourth quarter after Takata, a sophomore transfer from Kalaheo, hit a free throw to make it 41-36. But Roosevelt refueled its transition jets and went on an 11-2 run.
Vaimoana, in her first game since shoulder surgery, and Takata scored the next five points to cut the lead back to 52-43, but the Rough Riders went on an 8-0 run to put the game out of reach.
Roosevelt did it without relying on the long-range game, and the fast break was alive even without the fullcourt press. Kauhi had six of her 12 points in the final quarter. She also had four of her game-high 11 rebounds in the last stanza.
“Devyn came up big down the stretch, tracking rebounds, getting loose balls and being a big cutter for us,” Higa said.
Keala Quinlan, a 5-foot-11 sophomore, had two key steals in the fourth quarter.
Kawakami, a sophomore, was as unfazed as her teammates about their unusual long-range struggles.
“If we miss our shots, we try to get the rebound and put it in,” she said. “Then we try to get it back on defense.”
Rivera added four assists and three steals.
