Big Isle harbor improvements are scheduled
KAILUA-KONA » Hawaii officials plan $2.5 million in repairs and improvements to a harbor on Hawaii island as the second phase of a project for commercial and recreational boats.
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported Tuesday that the state Department of Land and Natural Resources is planning the road and system improvements at the Kawaihae Small Boat Harbor in South Kohala. The work — road widening, new waterlines and other improvements — is expected to take nine months.
A draft environmental assessment says the improvements will help fishing and boating activities and increase access for surfers, beachgoers and diving and fishing spots.
The assessment says no endangered species are expected to be threatened by the project, though green sea turtles feed in the harbor area.
Resurfacing project will affect traffic
The Kauai Department of Water will resurface roads in Wailua Houselots from 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today to Dec. 24, weather permitting.
Affected roads are Haleilio Road, Nonou Road, Eggerking Road, Pua Road, Lanakila Road, Hookipa Road, Oo Road, Kula Road, Kamokila Road, Wailana Road and Makani Road.
Traffic control will be in place while the work is being done, the county said in a news release. Motorists are advised to exercise caution while in the area and allow extra travel time.
The contractor is Goodfellow Bros. Inc. The paving marks the final phase of construction for the DOW’s Wailua Houselots Main Replacement Phase I, which began in March.
