Pi’ikea Kitamura had three hits in the final game of his four-year career with the Hawaii Rainbows, who lost 4-2 at UC Riverside on Saturday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex in Riverside, Calif.

UH finished 11-16 in its first year in the Big West and went 16-35 overall, matching the 16 wins in 2002 for the lowest win total in a single season since 1974.

Zach Varela (5-0) allowed one earned run and six hits in 5 2/3 innings to earn the win for UC Riverside (14-32, 10-17), which finished a game behind UH in eighth place in the conference.

Kitamura singled three times to finish with 205 hits in his UH career.

Trevor Frank got Marc Flores to foul out third with a runner on first to end the game and record his 10th save.

Flores drove in both UH runs and Kalei Hanawahine had two of Hawaii’s seven hits. Hanawahine, who will return next year for his senior season, hit .333 (21-for-63) in conference play with a team-leading 15 runs.

Junior Matt Cooper (3-8) allowed four runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings in the loss. Senior Jon Flinn pitched 3 1/3 shutout innings of relief, allowing just one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.
