Japan OKs funds for Mauna Kea telescope
A group building what will be the world’s largest and most advanced optical telescope atop Mauna Kea says the Japanese government has allocated key funding for the construction of the project.
Thirty Meter Telescope officials said Wednesday the Japanese parliament last month approved a budget including more than $12 million for the telescope.
Japan is expected to manufacture the main telescope structure and the mirror blanks for the segmented primary mirror.
Plea deal reached in Big Isle toddler death
A Big Island man accused of running over his 3-year-old son has reached a plea deal with prosecutors.
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Kim Taniyama says in exchange for dropping a manslaughter charge, Pedro Johanes Peter of Kailua-Kona will plead guilty June 18 to third-degree negligent homicide, a misdemeanor.
Peter was driving when his toddler fell out of the truck’s cab and was run over in January.
