Long Beach State finishes off sweep of Hawaii
Long Beach State scored the go-ahead runs in the top of the eighth inning without recording a hit to complete a three-game sweep of Hawaii with a 3-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium.
Scott Squier (4-5) walked the first two Dirtbags in the eighth and Eric Hutting scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly to put Long Beach State ahead 2-1. Colton Vaughn added an insurance run scoring on a wild pitch by Squier.
LBSU (26-23, 12-6 Big West) kept its postseason hopes alive with its eighth win in 10 games. Hawaii (19-28, 3-15) has lost 14 of its last 15 games in conference.
Jarrett Arakawa allowed one run on six hits in 5 2/3 innings with no walks and four strikeouts for UH. Adam Hurley drove in UH’s only run of the game with an RBI double in the seventh to score Marc Flores, who drew a leadoff walk against Long Beach State starter Nick Sabo.
Sabo allowed one run on two hits in six innings with two walks and three strikeouts and reliever Ryan Millison (4-1) pitched three scoreless innings to earn the win.
Hawaii’s final road series of the season begins Friday at UC Davis.
