It’s not often that a local high school reaches out of state to hire a football coach.
At Kamehameha, it was simply the right time.
The Warriors announced on Friday that former Dallas Cowboys tight end Doug Cosbie is the new coach, taking over for David Stant, who resigned earlier this year and is now coaching college football in Japan.
Cosbie’s interest began when some former players at Menlo College — Kamehameha graduates — suggested that he apply for the job. Having family in the islands was a factor that also piqued his interest.
"Kamehameha Schools and Hawaii are special and unique places with rich histories and I am truly honored and humbled to have the opportunity to lead the Warriors on the football field," said Cosbie in a press release. "There were a large number of highly qualified candidates for the position of head football coach at Kamehameha. I am blessed and grateful to have been chosen."
Cosbie told the Star-Advertiser recently that he was up against a strong field of candidates for the position. The former All-Pro played under Tom Landry after being drafted in the third round of the 1979 NFL Draft.
After retiring from the NFL, Cosbie became a volunteer coach at Santa Clara, his alma mater, then became an assistant at Stanford under Bill Walsh, the Hall of Fame coach of the San Francisco 49ers. He moved on to Cal, as offensive coordinator and receivers coach, before becoming an athletic director and head coach at Menlo.
More recently, he was the head coach at Sacramento High School and a semi-pro team in Italy.
With Cosbie’s coaching position at Kamehameha comes the same job Stant held at the school: athletic relations associate. Stant was in charge of the newly built athletic department facility on campus.
"We are thrilled to have Doug join our staff and are particularly excited for our football programs," Kamehameha athletic director Glennie Adams said in a press release. "Most impressive was the number of positive testimonials that came to us from former student-athletes who played for him."
