Drizzle helps Big Island brush fire from spreading

NAALEHU, Hawaii >> Overnight rain helped Hawaii County firefighters stop the spread of a brush fire that consumed one house in Naalehu.

Assistant Fire Chief Gantry Andrade says the slight drizzle helped firefighters working throughout the night to fight the blaze that started Monday morning.

He says there’s no active burning on Tuesday morning, but firefighters continue to put out hot spots.

The fire burned about 15 acres and forced families to evacuate their homes. Residents were allowed back into their homes by about 8 p.m.

A Red Cross shelter at Naalehu Community Center remained open throughout the night.

Andrade described the dwelling that burned as a weekend home for someone living in Kona.

Andrade says the cause of the fire is under investigation. There were no injuries reported.
