Hartong, Rozitis win UH’s Bonham Award
Hawaii women’s volleyball player Emily Hartong and men’s basketball player Davis Rozitis were the recipients of the 2014 Jack Bonham Award in recognition of their outstanding performances on and off the playing field.
The announcement was made Tuesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The award, considered the most prestigious in UH athletics, is given annually to the top male and female senior student-athlete who "best exemplifies the ideals for which Jack Bonham stood for in the areas of athletic excellence, academic achievement, public service, leadership and character."
Hartong was a three-time All-American and three-time first-team all-conference honoree. The Los Alamitos, Calif., native was twice named Big West Player of the Year and leaves UH ranked eighth all-time with 1,494 kills. She also is an active participant in numerous community service projects. Hartong was a three-time academic all-conference selection and will graduate in the spring with a degree in communications.
Rozitis lettered three seasons and was a member of coach Gib Arnold’s first recruiting class. The Cesis, Latvia, native was a tri-captain for the 2013-14 squad that won 20 games, a first for UH in a decade. Rozitis is a three-time academic all-conference selection and has also been an integral member of the Student Advisory Athletic Committee (SAAC). Rozitis earned his undergraduate degree last spring in political science and is currently pursuing his master’s in conflict resolution.
UH’s Brooklyn is Big West player of year
Hawaii’s Jonathan Brooklyn was voted Big West Men’s Tennis Player of the Year on Tuesday.
Brooklyn’s selection voted on and selected by the league’s head coaches was UH’s first major men’s tennis honor as a Big West member.
The native of Hillingdon, England, collected a 9-8 record as the exclusive No. 1 player for the Rainbow Warriors. He helped the ‘Bows finish 4-0 during the Big West regular season and win the league’s regular-season title.
Hawaii earned other Big West postseason honors. Nils Schuhmann, with partner David Schuster, was named first-team doubles and also earned a spot on the singles second team. Brooklyn also earned second-team doubles honors with teammate Carter Lam, and Chas Okamoto garnered a singles honorable mention.
Rainbow Wahine earn All-Big West honors
The Big West Conference named Hawaii women’s tennis player Cindy Nguyen to the All-Big West first team on Tuesday. Three Rainbow Wahine teammates also garnered conference honors.
Nguyen, a freshman from Long Beach, Calif., finished with a 22-4 overall singles record and ended her rookie season on an 11-match win streak.
Martina Kostalova earned an honorable mention in singles. Xenia Suworowa and Paulina Petriskova were named to the Big West second team for doubles.
Calip takes second in Big West tourney
Officials canceled the final round of the Big West Men’s Golf Championships on Tuesday and declared Cal State Fullerton the champion after two rounds at The Country Club at Soboba Springs in San Jacinto, Calif.
The final round was delayed for more than an hour, with gusts of up to 40 mph before officials deemed the course unplayable.
Hawaii senior Nainoa Calip finished in a three-way tie for second place at 3-under 141, while the Rainbow Warriors placed sixth overall with 591 strokes. Hawaii’s Brian Lee tied for ninth place at even-par 144.
Kamehameha clinches fifth HSA surf title
The Kamehameha surf team defeated Kahuku 75-49 to claim its fifth consecutive Hawaii Surfing Association State Championship on Saturday at Ala Moana Bowls.
Both schools entered the final with undefeated records, but the Warriors dominated all six divisions (boys and girls shortboard, longboard and bodyboard).
Kamehameha will be the lone Hawaii representative at the National Scholastic Surfing Association Championships at Dana Point, Calif., in June.
