Kamu Borden sure can protect the rim.
The 6-foot-4 junior snuffed five shots in the first half, and Ikaika Phillip scored 13 points as No. 2 ‘Iolani outlasted No. 5 Kamehameha 50-37 on Saturday at the Raiders’ gym. Robbie Mann and Zach Buscher added 10 points apiece for the Raiders.
"That changed the game a little bit. You had to be aware of him," ‘Iolani coach Dean Shimamoto said of Borden’s rim protection.
It was Kamehameha’s first loss after seven wins in a row during nonconference play.
"They dominated us around the basket. We played well enough in the first half, but we didn’t shoot the ball really well and neither did they. Kamu was tough around the basket," Warriors coach Greg Tacon said.
It was also Tacon’s return to the ILH, where he once coached Punahou.
"It’s what I expected. We battled for a while, but you’ve got to make shots and you can’t allow a team to beat you at one facet of the game over and over again," he said.
It was the league opener for ‘Iolani (11-4 overall) and Kamehameha (12-5 overall). As expected, each squad used physical, man-to-man defense to turn it into a grind. While the Raiders (11-4 overall) did their best to take away open looks for Kamehameha sharpshooters Noa Kinimaka and Jaycob Smith, the visitors latched onto Buscher and Phillip.
"We really worked hard all week making sure we knew personnel. Smith is a great breakdown guy, and Kinimaka is just deadly from the outside and goes to the hole really strong," Shimamoto said. "A lot of times, they’ll get in transition."
But the Raiders countered with quick transition defense and smart interior work.
"That’s pretty much what I expected. I didn’t think we’d lose. I knew we’d all play hard," said Borden, who also plays football.
Borden has worked extensively with assistant coach Cord Anderson, the former Raider who played college hoops.
"We work on post moves, we work on sealing, all kinds of stuff," Borden said. "He’s a great coach. He’s a tough guy to seal. He doesn’t take it easy on me."
Defensive stops were key for ‘Iolani. Kinimaka and Smith scored just nine points apiece, below their season averages. Everything inside was challenged by Borden, Mann and Hugh Hogland, a 6-7 freshman.
"We took away one aspect of their game," Borden said.
The Warriors got within six, at 41-35, after a drive for a three-point play by Kinimaka. But Borden answered with a layup and free throw for a nine-point lead with a little more than four minutes to play.
Borden scored again on a low-post bucket to open ‘Iolani’s lead to 46-35, and the Warriors got no closer than nine the rest of the way.
After playing in shot-clock tournaments in recent weeks, both teams were back in no-shot-clock mode and ‘Iolani milked the final three minutes of the quarter every chance it got.
