Payne, Florence eliminated in Santa Cruz
Hawaii’s Dusty Payne and John John Florence were eliminated from the O’Neill Coldwater Classic surf contest at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, Calif., on Sunday.
Payne defeated two Australians — Mick Fanning and Kieren Perrow — in his first-round heat and advanced all the way to the third round, where he lost to 11-time world champion Kelly Slater.
Florence placed third in his first-round heat to Patrick Gudauskas and Heitor Alves. He moved on to the second round and lost to Matt Wilkinson.
Duquesne tops Hawaii-Hilo in exhibition
Sean Johnson scored a game-high 19 points as Duquesne routed Hawaii-Hilo 92-46 in an exhibition men’s basketball game on Sunday in Pittsburgh.
Marvin Binney and Jeremiah Jones each added 13 for the Dukes, who shot 33-for-63 from the floor, including 15 3-pointers.
Michael Melonas had 12 points to lead the Vulcans, who scored just 19 points in the second half.
BYUH qualifies for West Region tourney
A 1-0 win for Cal Baptist over Grand Canyon on Saturday put Brigham Young-Hawaii (8-3-3) into the NCAA Division II West Region women’s soccer tournament. Although Cal Baptist (13-1), Azusa Pacific (12-2) and Point Loma Nazarene (9-3-2) finished ahead of the Seasiders in the Pacific West Conference regular season standings, they are still in the transition period into Division II and therefore are not eligible for postseason play.
HPU soccer teams top Holy Names
Guillem Vinas Marin found the back of the net with four seconds left in overtime as Hawaii Pacific defeated Holy Names 3-2 in men’s soccer on Saturday in Kaneohe.
Alejandro Porras led HPU (8-6-4, 7-3-4) with five shots on goal, while Holy Names (7-9-2, 4-9-1) goalkeeper Philip Poser recorded four saves in the loss.
» Andrea Aguirre scored twice to lead Hawaii Pacific in a 4-1 rout of Holy Names on Saturday in Kaneohe. The Sea Warriors (7-8-3, 6-5-3) outshot the Hawks (1-16-1, 0-13-1) 26-6.
