The Search for Signs of Hawaiian Life: Cape Town, South Africa
Wendell Ogitani, left, and wife Karen of Pearl City, and Anna and Mike Hinkley of Kaneohe found the Kauai sandwich shop in Cape Town in September during a tour of South Africa. When Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s anti-apartheid leader and former president, died Dec. 5, Wendell Ogitani said the trip took on a greater significance to the Hawaii travelers. “We got to experience the influence and appreciation of Mandela … while he was alive,” said Ogitani. “There were statues, buildings, streets named after him. He’s even on the currency.” And later, the momentous trip became part of the Ogitanis’ Christmas card.
