UH to host Turkey Trot
The University of Hawaii track and field team will host a Turkey Trot and USATF-Hawaii Association 5K championship on Nov. 23 at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.
The event will benefit the Rainbow Wahine track program and is set to start at 8 a.m.
Entries are available at active.com under UH Wahine Turkey Trot. Registration fees are $10 for UH students, U.S. military and USATF members and $20 for all other runners. Walk-up registration will be accepted until 7:30 a.m. on race day.
Boxing event Saturday in Palolo
Waipahu Boxing Club’s Keoni Adric Jr., a 2013 Junior Olympic champion, takes on state champion Hunter Manaba of Molokai 808 Boxing Club in Saturday’s main event of the 10th Clint Shelton Memorial at Palolo District Park gym.
Dedric Ke‘a of Pearlside B.C. will fight two-time state champion Michaiah Soars of Molokai in one of the semi-main bouts. In the other, Junior Olympic semifinals Logan Yoon from Kawano B.C. faces state champion Matthew Nainoa Perez of Boxfit808 B.C.
Boxers from Oahu, Maui and Molokai are scheduled to compete with the first of some 20 bouts starting at 6 p.m. Admission is $12 at the door.
Also, last Saturday, Kalakaua Gym’s Michael Balasi lost an eight-round decision to WBO and NABO champion Karim Mayfield at the ILWU Longshoremen’s Hall in San Francisco.
Pineda named PacWest’s top keeper
BYU-Hawaii senior Chris Pineda was named PacWest goalkeeper of the year as the conference announced its soccer all-conference teams and award winners on Wednesday.
The preseason top pick in goal lived up to the billing, ranking second in the conference in save percentage (.782) and fourth in goals-against average (1.241). His teammate, senior Jace Green, was named PacWest newcomer of the year. The BYU transfer ranked third in the PacWest with 22 points on nine goals and four assists. He had a seven-game point streak, leading the Seasiders to a 5-1-1 record.
Hawaii Pacific’s Brais Garcia, a senior forward from Madrid, Spain, joined Pineda and Green on the first team. Jackson Groves, a junior midfielder from Adelaide, Australia, represented the Sharks on the second team, as did Notre Dame de Namur junior defender Tyler Matas, a Mililani alumnus.
Ellis, Chan net all-conference honors
Hawaii Pacific’s Erika Ellis was named to the PacWest soccer all-conference first team along with Azusa Pacific senior defender Logan Chan, a Sacred Hearts alumna.
California Baptist senior defender Mikala Anuhea Gillis, who was teammates with Chan at Sacred Hearts, earned second-team recognition along with Chaminade junior forward Twyla Hamasaki (‘Iolani) and Hawaii Pacific senior forward Ashlyn Ubongen (Kauai).
