Discovery of body in Maui ditch classified as unattended death

Maui police classified the discovery of a body found Monday morning in a canal ditch in central Maui as an unattended death.

The body of the homeless man in a ditch near 239 Hoohana St. in Kahului was reported to police at 6:55 a.m. Monday.

The man, 51, apparently fell into the ditch and died, police said.

Maui Police spokesman Lt. William Juan said there were no outward signs of recent injury but an autopsy will be conducted on the body.

Attempts are being made to contact the man’s next of kin,
